Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Sherry and I’m a textile artist and designer/maker.
Having previously worked in banking and education, I now spend my days with textiles and thread, watercolours and sketchbooks. Inspired by the stunningly beautiful Devon countryside and coastline, I create individually handmade gifts and accessories.
Sewing is something I’ve done from a young age, initially on my Singer Starlet sewing machine that I still have, although it is largely enjoying a well earned retirement now. Sewing for myself, my family and home has always been a pleasure and now I spend my days creating individual items that I have now sold in ten countries around the world.
What makes me tick….Creativity feeds the soul. In this fast paced, connected world where we each of us, make our way through our lives with different passions, focuses and problems, it is so precious to be able to take the time to design and make something individual and with care. Nature and the great outdoors inspire me and can stop me in my tracks. Having only recently moved to Devon, the breathtaking raw beauty of Dartmoor is a place I’m only just beginning to explore. It moves me to silence, trying to take in its rugged glory…. The colours. The light. The sheer enormity of freedom it offers. The Jurassic Coast, with its 185 million years of history makes me smile. Cow parsley growing on verges, garden birds and wild flowers. All these things make me tick. They are my inspiration.
Fabrics, thread and ribbons …The wonderful process of choosing the colours and textures of fabrics is the beginning of the process for me. I love to work with natural fabrics. I adore linen, enjoying its wonderful weave and imperfections. I love the buttery softness of a fine tana lawn cotton and I especially admire Liberty prints, often pairing them with linens. It’s the juxtaposition of fabrics and colours, in conjunction with the trims and buttons that complete a product, that makes each item unique.
History… I’m always studying vintage embroideries. Any trip to a country house will find me squirrelled away admiring an embroidered panel. I could spend hours looking at antique textiles, embroidered ‘Pockets’ and vintage gowns. Sigh.
Passions… Simple. My family, animals and nature.
When I’m not sewing, I’m usually to be found walking in the countryside with a camera and a sketchbook, and always accompanied by my husband and our two crazy Labradors – Monty and Archie. If I can’t be outside, I’ll be crocheting (there’s always a blanket on the hook) or knitting…or reading…or painting..
Thanks for stopping by and please hop over to Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest where I spend far too much of my time 🙂
